Defensive Guide

Anvil Defensive Guide.......

An Anvil is the Defense of the Alliance. A account making lots of defensive troops is called an Anvil. This is the fundamental part of any alliance. If you can't defend your village then your offense counts for nothing. There have been cases in the past that Big hammers have been destroyed by just destroying the village and as such not giving the chance to use the hammers... Just because it was not defended well.

Hammer will have offense troops trained 24x7 in single village where as Anvil will have defense troops trained from the multiple villages simultaneously. And for hammers its OK to have only 2 villages dedicated for defense whereas anvil should have at least 6+ defense villages excluding the capital.

How does one go about building defense... and what is the troops that are best for defense is something I will touch.

Lets first see what tribes and troops are best of defense:

Romans: Praetorian and Legionaires
Teutons: Spearmen and Paladins
Gauls: Phalanxes and Druid Rider

Now how does one go about getting ready to make an anvil?

2 basic necessities are Infrastructure and Resources.

Infrastructure:
One thing which is common to hammers and anvils is that you need the infrastructure and resources to make troops 24x7... and by 24x7 I mean making troops round the clock and your level 20 barrack/stable is not free even for a minute. Along with that you also need to upgrade the forge to lvl 20. Once you have one villa ready with good Infrastructure for 24x7 troop production and you are producing troops 24x7 in that villa.. then you move on to the other village.

Resource:
To support 24x7 production of troops you need at least 4 support villages near your capital where all resource tiles are fully upgraded.

The advantage with Anvils over Hammers is that the loss can be easily covered and unlike Hammers, Anvils can get back on their feet asap... How?
Simple... Anvils make troops from multiple villas whereas hammers makes it from one villa... (that is why... when people loose their hammers it is a big thing.. as months of game play and hard work are lost.. whereas the fun of being a anvil is losing the troops and taking down one big hammer) . So this is how you keep building an anvil and keep pushing the no. of villa you can make the troops from.

Now comes to the other factor.. does this mean that Anvils are only defensive and don't make any offensive troops to raid or attack..? The answer is NO...
They do.. they make offensive army in one villa, (a 15c or 9c non-capital) and from that villa they raid so as to get the extra resources to grow.. (Remember the key to growth in Travian is raiding and robbing).

After reading all this you would have a brief idea about the working of a anvil or at least setting one up..
Before that.. I want you to know that a lot of people think playing defensive is a boring job... and the most fun is attacking and being a hammer..

Some of the reasons why I would say that Anvil is at par with hammers:

1)
Less dedication is needed. Believe it or not.. Travian is a long game.. those playing for the first time.. have no idea how long it is.. playing an entire server requires lot of dedication... more than half the people who join the server in the first month don't make it to the last month..
Hammers requires lots of dedication and a lot of activeness... and easily more than an anvil... one to keep the troops alive (Any attack on your villa with your offense defending it is a big loss where as loss of defense while defending is not a loss but a win bcoz that is what they are meant to do, destroying enemy hammers).

2)
Raiding required: For a hammer lots of raiding is required.. whereas anvil can do with normal raiding..

3) If hammer lost at a wrong time (as in end game or before artifact release) it almost ends the game for the player as it is very difficult to come back from it to make a difference whereas anvils can come back within a week or two (again thanks to troop building in multiple villas).

4) Hammers catch the eye of the opponent and opponent look to attack the hammers more often than Anvils..

There are a lot more .. but I guess this guide is becoming too big and you all are asleep by now..!!
This is the basic guideline about an Anvil. If you have any doubt please feel free to contact me..
